Power corrupts...Absolute power corrupts absolutely

I've always been a power junkie when it came to motorized transportation: A souped-up '57 Ford in high school, a Shelby Mustang and then a hopped up Torino before marriage. For a while it was Porsches and too many performance enhancements to drain my bank account.

So it was just a matter of time before the '08 XL 1200L went into the shop for some, shall we say, modifications: More compression, stiffer valve springs, a heavy breather, Screaming Eagle mufflers and new software for the electronic fuel injection.

Took my first ride on the "enhanced" Sporty recently and all I can say is "wow!"  The Sportster is already a quick bike. Now it's a lot quicker.

What's the old axiom about boys and toys?

...a stock Buell XB12 with essentially the same engine will eat the Sporty for lunch no matter what you do to it...

A Buell Lighting is like a sporty but just better in every way!

Hell a Suzuki 650 Burgman will smoke a sporty.

And chrome is heavy.

My 2002 Buell Cyclone (riding with a passenger), blew away a 07 Sporty from a dead stop to well, whenever I decided to slow down.

So, your fast = my slow. =)

Exactly where did I say that it was my desire to outrun anyone? Where did I say that I engage in the childish behavior of racing other bikes on the street?

I ride a bike for one reason: Pleasure. I generally ride within the speed limit and for the fun of it. I did the upgrades so I can have the power if and when I need it to avoid emergencies. I don't race Buells, BMWs, Suzukis or anything else on the road. As a journalist, I write too many stories about idiots who race on public roads and end up getting scooped up with a spatula by rescue squad personnel.

If you want to race or talk about racing other bikes on public roads, do it elsewhere. This is not a blog about being foolish on a bike. And I don't care much for people who post childish "my bike will outrun your bike" foolishness while hiking behind an anonymous name. If you want to debate me, do so with your real name.

Think of this more a sibling rivalry than a race for "pinks".

Although the mods described do provide some nice enhancements to the Sporty's performance, the Buell offshoot comes from the factory with more performance.

I'm sure folks would register here if they planned to spend much time.

Most of the Buell folks are at www.badweatherbikers.com. Over there, I'm FT BSTRD (FAT BASTARD).

I tried a sportster for a few years until I rode a Buell. If you like muscle then Buell is the way to go. It is what I always wished my sportster was. Right out of the box with no mods these bikes have more muscle and handle better then any sportster ever thought. Unless you ride a Buell you may never know what your sportster is missing.

My name is Ryan not anonymous.

...I've ridden just about every kind of bike made. I have friends who swear by Buells. I don't happen to care for them. Don't like the riding position.

The bike you ride is your choice and what's best for one kind of rider may not be the best for others. We're not here to play the childish game of "my bike is better than yours." That's a kid's game and I don't play with children.

BTW, using just your first name is no proof of anything. Lots of people named Ryan.
